2020.10.19 02:27 psych_yeo More Death
Tragically, I'm true to my DSM lable. Sometimes my posts are Love and Light, sometimes they are from the depths of despair. Today, I'm speaking from the depths. I was finishing ROMA 38 thinking about my original agitation when Covid-19 began. Thinking about how more death might not be such a bad thing, not from Covid but from the plethora of unmet needs. If it would just kill us and end this bodily suffering... wouldnt that be good?
Then Chris seemed to reach out of my phone speaker and give me a nice cuff on the back of the head. "I dont want to hear it." Fuck.
If I dont share my opinion here. If I'm not typing, I'll be feeling into my existential pain. I'll reach for chips and turn on netflix with not a good damn thing worth watching. It's all mind pollution. I'll go buy more alchohol ( probably with that demon sugar in it) or more tabacco, which I'm really trying to avoid becaus eim trying to, "stay with the trouble." I'm trying to feel all this fucking pain. Feel what it feels like to not consume things I do not need for a few fucking days.
So please, even if you dont want to hear it, let me do this instead of all the other pain relieving activities I can indulge in. I'm about to argue for more death so if you cant listen to such darkness to this callous, bitter, fatigued verbose lament, please dont. Just downvote this shit.
When this all began early in the year, when it really blew up, I was frustrated to see the societal wide behavioural change for Covid-19, that wasn't induced by any former tragedies.
Charles Eisenstein pointed to this in his essay, 'The Coronation'. I'll paraphrase him but I'm sure his inquiry was, "why have we not mobilized the same response for starvation or suicide? Because a virus is something we know what to do about. We find the enemy, the virus and kill it, but with other issues like starvation, famine, malnutrition and suicide we can not use the same technique." He said something like this.
My frustration was yes, do what we must to protect the most vulnerable people but do not get on your high horse that because you've initiated Covid protocol, you have somehow done what's needed to be done to protect the vulnerable.
Before all this happened both children and the elderly, the most vulnerable to Covid-19, where treated like absolute shit. The amount of suffering we subject our young and old to is un-fucking-believable. We have forgotten how to raise children. Like Jean Leidloff noted in the continuum concept, the difference between a hunter-gatherer child rearing practice and a modern practice for raising children is immense and when both ways are put side by side and compared it is clear to see the amount of pure and utter anguish western infants and children go through.
The elderly are forgotten. We know this is true. How many of them are staring out the fucking window right now, even before Covid-19, wondering to themselves, "Where did everyone go?" That old folks home are a thing is a tragedy and we know it. Read Helena Norbert-Hodge's Ancient Futures. It is clear to anyone who can bare to look that getting old wasn't always as terrifying as it is today. Elders had a role in intact cultures, they where, on average, more vital and of sound mind until the day of there deaths. Fuck, do we not know this is true?
Our old are suffering in ways our Ancestors can not imagine and if our Ancestors saw the way we treat our children they would collapse in heart break.
When I think about more death, what comes to mind is the none human world. When living things can not meet their needs they stunt their growth. When they are further stressed by continual unmet needs they wither and die. Death is a release from the suffering of continual unmet needs. What beauty. To strive and struggle, to answer your pain, to find the object your pain points to and bask in the pleasure of simply meeting a need.
But humans, oh we are clever mother fuckers are we not? We can create an immense void in ourselves and consume all kinds of shit to avoid the pain of unmet needs. We can give ourselves enough to survive and an unending array of simple superficial pleasures to deal with the unbelievable poverty of unmet needs that all of us our enduring today.
Francis Weller called it primary satisfactions nad secondary satisfaction. Primary satisfaction is all the things that answer our pain and longing on a deep level. Obtaining all the things we have evolved to need. Instead of a commons that swells with intimates, young and old, stories and the local booze we have happy hour. Instead of sex, porn. Instead of nourishment and satiety in food, endless garbage snacks. And blah blah blah. We know, deep fucking down, and most likely not so deep, that we are not getting what we need. It's a simple fucking inquiry, go through your day and ask yourself, "what am I doing? Do i need this? Did my ancestors have it? What happens if I drop all the things I dont need? What have I evolved to truly need? What will satisfy me to my very core for more then a fleeting moment?"
Pure dread. Feel the terror arise when you vipassana the shit out of your desire but dont take everything away. Fucking go nuts on fulfilling the needs you feel are evolutionary. Man, we are fucked. Our normal, everyday, mundane lives are packed with excess. Its fucking sick.
So, it seems to me that the more intelligent living beings on this planet die when they go without the ability to meet their needs. Humans we live our entire lives without even being able to acknowledge the extent of our poverty. We don't have words for the needs we dont meet. We just avoid. Pain avoidance is our thing.
Chris you recently quoted that 40% of children didnt make it past the age of 10 in the days of old. To me that's the benevolence of life herself. This kids cannot get what they need so they die. These kids are not coddled and are allowed to risk their lives in order to truly live... and they die. Death is not the enemy. Tragic. Absolutley fucking tragic and guess what those people knew how to fucking create a container for grief. They could handle lifes necessary loss. They knew death had to happen to feed life.
We keep all those kids alive with our modern medicine and I've seen the...ah... its unspeakable man. I've seen the conditions of children in my city. We can keep this kids alive but we can not meet their needs. Can anyone hear me? We can not meet our children's needs. Our economics, our social structure, our nuclear families can not do it. Humans are torturing themselves and demonizing death.
I recently heard David Abram say that a true story was one that kept the people in right relationship with each other and their place. I can dig that. So... it doesnt matter what we tell ourselves as long as we are in right relationship or moving towards establishing right relationship. Does anything we tell ourselves keep us in intimate relationship with our tribe and the place we pull our sustenance from.
Its fucked and it's dark but what if we just asked ourselves if it's in right relationship to let an animal suffer its entire lives so we can continue living our imbalanced existence. What if we said no? What if we killed, freed... doesnt matter... what if we somehow just stopped torturing domestic animals? Keep the holistic free range regenerative practice because maybe that's in right relationship bit stop the industrial meat producing. Then we cant feed the people. Well... maybe... let them starve. Why is it ok to keep a human alive at all cost when the amount of nohuman life taken, caused to suffer, or exploited, in order to keep that human breathing is so immense. And the most tragic bit is... we our exploited ourselves. The cost to sustain us is more than we can bare to look at and...and... we are sustaining a soulless exploited human who needs even more nonhuman suffering not to meet his needs... but to avoid the pain of not meeting, not even knowing, his needs. Its fucked. Call it hell. Call it a hellish prison and I would agree with you.
Seen in this light, death is a beautiful thing. I've been suicidal. I know the call to life is immense. I know if you can live you should but not at the expense of the rest of the living world. If you can live in right relationship than you should live. If you can even just move towards right relationship with the natural world then you should live but... if your stuck in a hellish prison of being unable to meet your needs, unable to even articulate what your needs are, stuck in unending pain avoidant strategies to avoid the consequences of those unmet needs. Then fuck it. You should die and that should be a beautiful thing and the tragedy of the end of your life should be acknowledged, not forgotten and deeply mourned.
The ones who walked away from Omelas, maybe they did it because the emotional math of the whole thing didnt add up. Like we can be concious of the unintended consequences of our continued breath, like we can hold all the human artifacts in our day in our hands and intuit the web of happenings that got it to us, we can know the suffering involved in getting these things to us, we can feel into all of this and say... my life and the way I'm living it is not worth the destruction needed to sustain my life. If I can not meet my needs, be in right relationship or move towards being in right relationship than I should die.
Maybe those who walked away from Omelas, who, "knew where they were going," were walking to their deaths. That place that, "we can not describe."

2020.10.16 16:22 funky_unky I penned a letter to my Conservative family members laying out reasons the president is unfit
Please feel free to use at your discretion, fingers crossed I do not get written out of a will but you have to stand up for something. VOTE PEOPLE! WE GOT THIS!
I’ve been working on this letter for some time now and last night I felt truly inspired. I saw the drastic differences between the two candidates and for the first time in four years I felt hope. Hope for this country. Hope that we, as Americans, can decide to elect a humble, respectable human into the office in our land. One candidate is trying to unite us and work together to fight this pandemic and hardships everyday Americans face. The other is a divisive man trying to tear us further apart and take this country down a dark path with ideas and policies that benefit only the most fortunate elites. The differences are stark and all you have to do is look at the demeanors of the two town halls last night.. One was civil with questions actually being thoughtfully answered and details into actual policies that will be implemented in the next four years while trying to relate with voters who are truly trying to decide who to choose in this incredibly important election. The other was another incoherent rambling of a man clearly losing his grip on reality, only attacking questions asked with no substance in any answers and who’s incapable of relating to the everyday American. One man took responsibility for all previous choices/policies that had unintended consequences and owned up to not having foresight into them, looking to continue conversation and understand hardships people face, while the other was completely defensive and continued the tiresome rhetoric of “it’s everyone against him” and again, taking no responsibility at all for the suffering we all face in these uncertain times. It’s honestly exhausting and I feel inspired that soon, I will not have to wake up and worry about our standing in the world and the future of this country. I hope you can see things below with an open mind and continue a dialog so we can see through our differences in the future. Love you all!
Dear Friends and Family,
I usually refrain from discussing politics with family members and close friends but I am too concerned to not reach out and give a bit of insight of what is currently at stake for my future and the future of generations to come. It is not my intent to attack anyone’s personal and political affiliation, but to address serious concerns on behalf of all us, as Americans, moving forward. I apologize in advance for anything offensive below but I am tired, I am frustrated, I am sick of waking up every day and wondering how our president is going to ruin our reputation as a country even further today and frankly, I am sick of this administration’s constant lies and gaslighting. I have tried to base everything below in facts so if you find something patently false, please let me know!
Currently, too many Americans are protesting against heinous acts of racially motivated police violence, a pandemic continues to ravage the country and yet our current president acts as if he is the one that is being treated unfairly. He continues to incite racial tension and violence across the country while sowing doubts, with zero evidence, that our country is capable of conducting a free and fair election. He persists to publicly downplay the seriousness of the Coronavirus, uses a racially suggestive name (China virus) and his ideas on how to combat it are a source of global embarrassment. Since contracting it, he has shown zero remorse over the humans that have perished and were not provided the socialized healthcare and medicine that his “GOP” is vehemently opposed to. All this while it comes out that the man does not pay any income tax. He is literally grifting off of the United States of America.
Our President has taken one of the most respected countries in the history of the modern world and made us look like incompetent fools. Our president failed us in providing a leadership role when the pandemic hit. He candidly admitted that he intentionally “played down the seriousness of the virus” as he knew this would hurt his political future. Nevertheless, he wants all praise for the minimal work he has actually done and “takes no responsibility at all” for the millions now who are suffering or dead due to his inadequate action. Publicly he downplays the seriousness of it and has since told people to “not be afraid of COVID” and not to let it “control their lives”. He’s right that it can no longer control the lives of the 220,000 Americans now dead because of it. Behind closed doors it is apparently a different story as he admits to how serious this pandemic truly is and how it is impacting everyone. Is that how you want a leader to act? I get that he does not want to incite panic in the American people but this is a very serious situation and we need someone in office who actually listens to doctors and does not just wing it on his own beliefs and cares only for the stock market. Are we not a strong enough country that we need our government to mislead us about the seriousness of a worldwide pandemic? America is supposed to be a world leader in times of trouble and now we are literally laughed at on a world stage. The president has failed to lead our nation during the worst pandemic in a century. He has prioritized his re-election and self-gain over the lives of more than 220,000+ Americans. How does one defend that?
In November, this country will elect a new president and send a new congress to Washington. This election is about the soul of America as much as it’s direction. The policies which Trump supports, and the vitriol and constant lies which he spouts at every opportunity, are causing long term damage to the United States. His shortsighted approach is not based on reason or science, it is based entirely on vindictiveness and anything the president believes will help him personally. Anything which Barack Obama did, Trump feels he must undo. One of the things which Trump “undid” was President Obama’s pandemic response team and took scientists out of China which were studying the exact origins of COVID. Perhaps if that team existed in January of this year, we would be like most other organized and developed countries and have a MUCH better grasp on this virus and be more focused on economic recovery instead of attacking every single city, state, or local official who disagrees with him. How is it that, 7 months into this pandemic, a breakout happens at the White House and they will not contact trace it or even investigate where it came from and how it spread? Why was that not their number one priority? The truth is, this administration does not care about the American People one bit.
What kind of president sends out tweets claiming his own states are “Going to hell”? What is that? How is that leading and uniting a country? America needs to heal and we need someone who has even a little bit of compassion to lead. I do not believe that our current president has an ounce of sympathy in him and he puts this on display almost daily. The #1 priority of the leader of a country is to protect it’s citizens and hundreds of thousands of Americans have now unnecessarily died under Trump and his inadequate national response to this pandemic. It’s understandable how covid is slower and less dramatic than a terrorist attack, but nonetheless, Trump failed to protect us due to his own negligence and ego. The worst part is he knew how serious this virus was back in January/February when he was publicly calling it another “democratic hoax”.
How will history view this failure of leadership? The president is unfit. Countless former White House appointees and staffers, both civilian and military, have cited scores of examples of the president being temperamentally, experientially, and intellectually unfit to be president. How does one overlook this? Are we not to believe the men and women who are putting their life on the line to defend this country and instead support someone who dodged the draft at least 4-5 times and does not have a single family member that has served our country? He has called war heroes “losers” and doesn't understand how anyone could give up their life for their country. This most likely stems from his posh lifestyle and growing up with everything he could ever imagine given to him with a silver spoon. The man has never sacrificed anything for anyone. Instead he is a conman who looks to take advantage of anyone and everyone he can. This is a man that ordered the clearing out of peaceful protesters in front of the White House with tear gas and force only to go stand in front of a church (which he never attends) and hold up a bible (which he has never read). I don’t understand what this man has to do for people to see through his hogwash. What happened to our constitution? He falsely claims the left wants to “Abolish the 2nd Amendment” when he has literally zero issue with violating the first amendment in his own front lawn.
Four more years of Trump means the perpetuation of a policing culture which sees African Americans killed for minor infractions because of their skin color. Police should not be judge, jury, and executioner. The president has failed to engage in the dialog on racial injustice that has captivated the nation. Instead, he is actively widening the divisions in our country and promoting white supremacist tropes by telling them to “stand by.” He has a pattern of refusing to condemn hate groups and conspiracy theorists that support him and instead of listening to people of color hurting in these uncertain times, he tear-gasses them and calls them all “thugs”. How does this help unite a country? Black lives matter. All lives cannot matter until black ones do.
The president has praised murderous dictators while attacking our democratically elected allies, both locally and abroad. He rewards totalitarians with friendship and summits while extorting our partners in NATO, the UN, and the WHO. How does that enhance our national security? The president viciously attacks anyone who criticizes him, including allies, friends, appointees, elected officials, and staffers. He routinely and unapologetically makes racist, misogynistic, and xenophobic comments and labels his enemies with childish and offensive nicknames. Would you want your children or grandchildren to imitate such behavior? Are these the qualities you want in a leader? We need people in Washington who are willing and able to reach across the aisle and not call their opponents “monsters”. How do we expect anything to get done with a completely unhinged provocateur who doesn’t understand the meaning of the words “self-made man.”
I fear that if Mr. Trump is given four more years in office, it will do irreparable harm to our country and to the future lives of your children and grandchildren. Four more years of Trump normalizes a culture where sexual assault is OK as long as the person doing the assaulting is famous. The amount of sexual abuse allegations against this man is completely repulsive and it seems a new allegation comes out every 3-4 months. If you care about your sisters, daughters, granddaughters, mothers, friends, or any human being, this should have been enough from the onset to prove that this man is unfit to serve as president of the United States. Why would Trump be actively and aggressively refuse to provide his DNA in rape and sexual abuse cases against him that would totally exonerate him if he was innocent? Do you want to support a man who was good friends and attended parties with Jefferey Epstein and all the atrocious acts that he was involved in? Do you want to support a man who does not believe women when they take the incredibly strong step of coming forward and confronting their abuser? Are we not supposed to believe these women? When credible accusations surface, Trump and all his enablers in the GOP do everything in their power to silence these powerful women. On the flip side, back in 2018, directly after the midterms and when Democrats regained the house, sexual assault accusations came out against Senator Al Franken which were over 10 years old. What did the man do? He resigned. He did not remember if the allegations were true or not but he chose to believe the woman and took responsibility for his actions. Franken was a Progressive icon and fought for people from all backgrounds. It was a major blow to the Democratic party but he saw that there were credible allegations and accepted that. If you honestly believe anyone in the Republican senate would do the same, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I would like to sell you. This is not the same GOP that it was even 5 years ago. That GOP at least had some interest of middle and lower class Americans in mind. The last 2 republican nominees and the last republican president don't support this president and his re-election. That is mind blowing. The “Republican” party has become a cult that revolves around pledging loyalty to someone who acts like a repugnant dictator. We need a leader in the White House who is willing to listen to both sides and do what is best for ALL Americans, not just those on the left or right.
Do we want a president who sleeps with porn stars while his wife and infant are at home? Then pays the porn star hush money and lies about it to the American People? Is this what America wants in a leader?
President Obama was relentlessly attacked for lacking transparency, yet Trump is actively blocking testimony, hides his taxes, and conducts meetings with authoritarian leaders in secret. If someone is innocent and has a clean, honest, record, why would he feel the need to do any of this? What if Obama, or any Democratic politician, blocked testimony or if he refused to show their taxes? I’m sure you would be furious, and rightly so. We can’t let our principles become compromised when our guy is in office. The double standard in our political environment needs to end. Why would Trump still be actively and vehemently trying to hide his taxes if he is an honest man with nothing to hide? The man is clearly compromised by something or someone.
Do you remember the photo of an El Salvadoran man and his two and a half year-old daughter who drowned as they fled the violence in their home country, hoping to seek a new life in America? They died because Trump wouldn’t let them claim asylum at the border entry points. He denied them the safety and promise that America used to stand for. Imagine if we were not as blessed as we were to be born into privilege and were forced to flee our homes. You have this dream of a better life where anything is possible but when you reach this promise land you are told that you can not seek shelter there as a man who was born with a golden spoon thinks that you are not welcome and you should go back to your “shithole country”.
I strongly believe in comprehensive immigration reform and that people should "wait their turn" and immigrate here legally. So let's reform our immigration policy to help expedite the process so human beings and refugees don’t have to take the extremely dangerous trip to try to get to the US illegally. We also have an administration that is constantly violating human rights of these people looking for a better life. They rip children away from their families without any contact and recently it was unveiled that doctors are performing unwanted hysterectomies on detainees. This practice is rooted in ethnic cleansing, how is any of this acceptable? We are on a destructive path to repeat the faults of some of the darkest days of modern history again and I do not want to be associated with any enablers of this. Clearly this path is untenable and a different path must be taken so we can all move forward and truly have checks and balances in our political system.
You say you don’t like all the dramatics of his twitter and some of his actions but you support him for his conservative policies and the economy. I am curious as to which of the policies, that Trump himself has been proactive on, you agree with? The “Largest middle class tax cut ever”? As a member of society that falls directly into the heart of the middle class; want to know what sort of cut I got? 1.4%, or about $1,000. Is that worth the $3 TRILLION that it cost towards our national debt? I see myself as fiscally conservative and even vote for conservative candidates if I align with them, but the GOP is no longer the party of fiscal responsibility that we used to know. I would much rather have seen that $1,000 go to people in actual need of assistance. Is it so hard and are people so selfish that having universal healthcare is considered a radical idea? Should people not be able to get help when they are sick, or cannot support a family on minimum wage? I thought we lived in the land of opportunity.
There is no denying that before COVID hit, the economy was doing fantastic and maybe even was the strongest it has ever been. How is it, then, that we have a record amount of debt and this administration was still incapable of balancing a budget? If the economy was so strong, we would have been able to cut into our record high national debt. Instead, the president is only looking to line the pockets of his friends and fellow cronies. In 2016, Trump said he would balance our budget and eliminate our national debt since he’s the “greatest businessman ever.” Instead our debt by the end of his term will be more than 50% higher than it was under Obama. He cares about no one but himself. This was very noticeable at the first debate between him and Biden. Did you notice the difference in tone? Joe was there to (try to) speak to the American people, to convince them to vote for decency in America. He was ready to lay out policy and ideas that the American people deserve to hear, instead he was bullied from the onset. The president would not let him answer any questions and insulted his recovered and deceased children. Not once did Trump try to speak to his citizens, he was only focused on distraction and attacking Joe Biden. Is that leadership? It was a disgrace. That was one of the saddest days for America in a long long time as the rest of the world laughs at our government’s ineptitude.
Trump took our favorable economy, riding years of incredible growth from the previous administration, and did what he historically does with any business he touches and destroyed it. He is clearly not totally to blame as a pandemic hit but there is no arguing we are recovering and dealing with this much slower and more incompentanly than other similar countries. This is directly relates to his failed response and incompetence to deal with a worldwide issue.
On healthcare Trump continues to say he wants to repeal and replace Obamacare and he has not only failed to repeal, he has no plan to replace it with any sort of plan. We have been told that it is in the works for ELEVEN YEARS now with the GOP providing nothing of substance. He also claims that he'll protect those with pre-existing conditions from being denied health insurance but currently has a case going to the supreme court to get rid of just that. COVID will soon be a pre-existing condition which will impact another 8 MILLION+ citizens. You cannot trust anything this man says. How is that a quality you want in a leader? Myself and the majority of my friends / colleagues have never had this little faith in our government.
You say you have hope there is a “Silent Majority” that will show up and keep this atrocious man in power. I have hope that this country is better than that and sees through all of his gaslighting and lies. This is a man that cheats at everything he does. He unabashedly has cheated on all 3 of his wives, multiple times. It has been well documented that he cheats at golf, which in my mind, is one of the best ways to see the integrity of a person and how honest they truly are. He also has an abysmal track record as a businessman, trying to stiff honest workers and contractors out of their deserved contracts. His consistent plan of attack is to hit them with so many delays and lawsuits that they eventually either just give up or go bankrupt. How can anyone trust this man to do anything except what is best for himself?
All of this is why I am asking you to consider two simple things, for the sake of your family and generations to come:
1.) Consider supporting Joe Biden. He is far from a perfect candidate and the DNC has its own deeply rooted problems, I know, but this is about the future of our country, democracy, and the treatment of all humans. A vote for Joe Biden is not necessarily a vote for Biden, but rather a repudiation of this new GOP that now has no regard for rules, laws, debt or foreign policy.
2.) Turn off Fox News and all other right-wing propaganda. Fox is the mouthpiece and amplifier for Trump’s hatred. It is a wedge which seeks to divide America and to spread the president’s disinformation.
I am always looking for engaged conversation on this and want to understand how people can still support this man, so open dialogue is strongly encouraged here. What policies of his do you directly support? Are those enough to give up your dignity and vote for a man who brags about assaulting women and refuses to disavow white supremacists while pushing conspiracy theories and furthering the divide in this country that he’s helped sow? Please, help me understand. Do you want to vote for someone who is a devout catholic and attends mass every Sunday or a false prophet who claims to be a Christian and yet cannot recite a single verse that reverberates with him, has never asked for forgiveness, and does not regularly attend church while mocking religion behind closed doors? The difference in cadence and demeanor between the two candidates is drastic. Do you want a leader who is poised and calm when asked tough questions and is willing to admit past mistakes with perspective on actual impacts his decisions make? Or do you want someone in the highest office in this land to only attack, interrupt, and go on the defensive when someone’s views don’t align exactly with his own? I know I will be voting for decency and a bright future and not for bigotry and division this month so I ask you all of this out of love, for your friends, your family, your children, and your grandchildren’s sake, please please please do not vote for Trump.
Vote for Change

Several months ago, right after the last Academy Awards, I posted a long, long, long list of possible contenders that had prospects to fight for the next Oscars. It was a time of hope, of looking forward, and of positivity.
Then, COVID-19 happened.
And now, we find ourselves in a year that may change the movie industry forever, with the lack of safety of theaters in times of a pandemic accelerating the switch of mainstream audiences to streaming and VOD. These are times where some people are beginning to wonder, even after they pushed the eligibility date for two more months, why the Academy doesn’t cancel next year’s Oscars. And in this rocky terrain, we lost many contenders. Fire up the Hunger Games cannons, because these are some casualties of the season (so far).
Launched to 2021: Annette, Benedetta, Deep Water, Dune, In the Heights, King Richard, Last Night in Soho, Memoria, Nightmare Alley, Passing, Red, White and Water, Raya and the Last Dragon, The Last Duel, The Power of the Dog, Tick, Tick… Boom!, West Side Story.
Unknown status / missing in action: After Yang, Blonde, Breaking News in Yuba County, C’mon C’mon, Next Goal Wins, Stillwater, The French Dispatch, The Humans, The Tragedy of Macbeth, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Those Who Wish Me Dead.
But even if this year isn’t as loaded with clear awards candidates, there are plenty of movies that are already drawing buzz for an Oscar season that started brewing a month ago, with the kickoff of the Venice Film Festival, and will go on for six and a half more months, when the Academy Awards take place on April 25, 2021. It’s gonna be a long, weird and rocky season, which is gonna be great to see in terms of the narratives that are coming up.
-Ammonite (trailer): When people were betting on the likelier contenders of this year, many people pointed in the direction of Francis Lee’s period drama, with previous Best Actress winner Kate Winslet and constant nominee Saoirse Ronan. Going into the premiere at Toronto, people had their eyes set in this queer romance between a paleontologist and a young wife in the coasts of England during the 19th century. But then, some things happened. First, Winslet started her promotion of the movie by talking about her regret for working with Woody Allen and Roman Polanski that sounded unconvincing to the ominous Film Twitter. Then, another queer period drama, Mona Fastvold’s The World to Come, started to take the attention away at Venice. And finally, the movie premiered. The reaction? Cold. Critics came out mixed with the movie, with many of them comparing it negatively to last year’s Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and saying that it’s too dull and alienating. Does that mean that all is lost? Not exactly. While the movie (which, considering the genre, really needs critics' support to get into the Best Picture category) has been dismissed, the acting by Winslet and Ronan has been received positively. Now that so many other contenders have been dropping out of the year, they might get some room to campaign from a (social) distance.
-Another Round (trailer): Speaking of TIFF premieres, a film that had a better time at the Canadian festival was the reunion between director Thomas Vinterberg and star Mads Mikkelsen, who reunited years after making the stirring drama The Hunt (not the one with Betty Gilpin carrying a bad political satire, the one about a Danish teacher wrongly accused of sexual abuse). This time, the material is lighter, being a dramedy about four teachers who decide to test out a theory about how people can live and work a little better if they increase the level of alcohol in their blood. Critics really liked the way the movie dealt with alcoholism, and Toronto audiences made it a runner up for the People’s Choice Award of the festival. In a year without so much exposure from other festivals, this Cannes 2020 selection could make a candidate for the Best International Film category.
-Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (trailer): Surprise, new Borat film! While Sacha Baron Cohen made headlines several times this year because of stunts that people assumed were about a second season of Who is America?, the Internet was shocked when, in early September, it was confirmed that it was actually a very niiiiice return from the journalist character that made him famous, shot during quarantine. In a matter of weeks after the reveal, the sequel got sold to Amazon Prime and got a release date for October 23. Why so soon? Well, apparently the movie, which got him in trouble with Rudy Giuliani and other people, is about Borat taking his daughter on a road trip to give her as a bride to VP Mike Pence. Even if this movie doesn’t manage to achieve the feats of the 2006 movie (which got a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination, let’s remember), it will help Baron Cohen’s image a lot, because it will come a week after his big Oscar play.
-Cherry: While everybody knows them mostly because of their contributions to the MCU, directors Joe and Anthony Russo and actor Tom Holland are trying to branch out together. Now Apple has bought into their efforts, paying more than 40 million dollars to acquire their new crime drama, about the life of former Army medic Nico Walker, who started robbing banks after his days in Iraq left him with PTSD and a pill addiction. Will Holland manage this time to escape from the shadow of “oh, jeez, Mr. Stark” Spider-Man before Chaos Walking or the Uncharted movie come out? That’s a question for another day.
-Da 5 Bloods (trailer): Talk about timing. Merely days after the country was mobilized by the police brutality that continues to divide the United States, Spike Lee premiered his new war drama on Netflix. In a vibrant, disjointed but passionate portrait of four African American veterans who return to Vietnam to search for their fallen leader and some treasure, Lee struck gold yet again with his usual fans, even though the moving of the Oscar ceremony threatened to make it harder to remind Academy voters about this movie. However, with an astounding performance from Delroy Lindo (who is confirmed to be campaigned in the Best Actor category) and a supporting turn from Chadwick Boseman which got reframed with the news of his bravery in life and death, this has what it takes to fight for a spot in the Best Picture lineup.
-Everybody’s Talking About Jamie (trailer): When it became clear that quarantine wasn’t gonna be a breeze, the first movie in consideration wise enough to move a little further ahead in the calendar was this adaptation of the hit West End production about a gay British teenager who dreams of becoming a drag queen and get his family and schoolmates to accept his sexuality. With a release date on February 26, 20th Century Studios (man, it’s weird to not use Fox in that name) hopes to strike gold, with a cast that mixes young unknowns, familiar names (Sharon Horgan, Sarah Lancashire and my boy Ralph Ineson) and the previously nominated legend that is Richard E. Grant (who is playing a former drag queen named Loco Chanelle), now taking advantage of the move of other musicals like Annette, In The Heights and West Side Story. I mean, this has at the very least some Golden Globes nods in the bag.
-French Exit: Before its premiere as the closing film of the NYFF, many pundits were expecting this surreal comedy to be somewhat of a comeback for past Best Actress nominee Michelle Pfeiffer, who here plays a close to penniless widow who moves to Paris with her son (Lucas Hedges) and cat, who also happens to be her reincarnated husband (Tracy Letts). However, the first reactions for the film adaptation of the Patrick deWitt novel were all over the place, with some people feeling cold by the execution of the weirdness and others being won over. Still, everybody had good things to say about Michelle Pfeiffer’s performance, but after the mixed reception to the rest of Azazel Jacobs’ film she really would need a lot of critics support to get anywhere near the Best Actress category. With a release date on February 12, it seems that Sony Pictures Classics is skipping the critics awards, and the distributor has a couple of big competitors above this one.
-Good Joe Bell: Every year, there are movies with big stars that go to festivals full of hope for praises and awards. Some of them work and go on, others don’t and get forgotten about. Mark Wahlberg tried to remind people that he occasionally is a good actor with a true life drama where he plays a father who decides to walk across America to raise awareness about bullying after his son, tormented for being gay, commits suicide. The film by Reinaldo Marcus Green premiered at TIFF, and the reaction was… not great. Some critics defended it, but most saw it as a flawed, baity product starring a man with a history of hate. Still, it got bought by a distributor: Solstice Studios, a new player in the game which just released its first movie, Unhinged (yup, the one about Russell Crowe road raging). While they paid 20 million dollars for Good Joe Bell, it’s clear that this won’t get near the Oscar telecast.
-Hillbilly Elegy: While many movies this year have some level of anticipation, Film Twitter is bracing for this movie in the “is this gonna be the next Green Book?” way. Ron Howard’s adaptation of J.D. Vance’s memoir about his low income life in a poor rural community in Ohio has many fearing about the overuse of tropes involving what’s called white trash porn, but rarely, Netflix has kept silent about this release. Even though it has Oscar bridesmaids Glenn Close (7 nominations) and Amy Adams (6 nominations), the streamer has not even released a photo of the movie, which supposedly will come out in November. And if you want another bad omen, take a look at the lower levels of this list by a familiar voice.
-I’m Thinking of Ending Things (trailer): Speaking of Netflix, did you know that there is a new Charlie Kaufman there, right now? While his adaptation of the dark novel by Iain Reid, seemingly about a woman (Jessie Buckley) who is taken by her boyfriend (Jesse Plemons) to meet his parents (Toni Collette and David Thewlis), got the usual reception of confusion and praise that follows his movies, the release was followed for what befalls most of the Netflix original movies: a couple of days in the Top 10, and then it fell into the void. While Buckley and Plemons deliver great work in this demented, melancholic story, it’s hard to see this movie getting anything else than a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination for Charlie. And that’s a long shot.
-I’m Your Woman: Following the little seen but critically acclaimed Miss Stevens and Fast Color, Julia Hart started 2020 with a Disney+ adaptation of the YA book Stargirl, and now she follows it with a drama for Amazon that will have its world premiere as the opening film of the AFI fest on October 15. In this movie, Rachel Brosnahan hopes to translate her TV success with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel to the big screen, playing a woman in the ‘70s that has to go on the run with her kid due to her husband’s crimes.
-Judas and the Black Messiah (trailer): Even if this doesn’t end up winning any awards, it has a real shot at being the best trailer of 2020. Formerly titled Jesus Was My Homeboy, this biographical drama by Shaka King tells the tale of two men: Fred Hampton (Kaluuya), an activist and Black Panther leader, and William O’Neal (Stanfield), the FBI agent sent to infiltrate the party and arrest him. While the trailer for this movie promised a release “only in theaters”, we shall see if Warner Bros backs down from that fight.
-Let Them All Talk: While we’re on the subject of Warner Bros, we have to mention what’s happening with HBO Max. While the start of the streaming service hasn’t been good (I mean, there are still people confused about that name) and it lead to some people assume will cause many firings, it has begun to make some buzzed titles on TV, like Close Enough, Raised by Wolves and the remains of the DC Universe failed streaming service. Now, to make a mark in the movie business, the streamer has a new Steven Soderbergh movie, a comedy that stars Meryl Streep as a celebrated author that takes her friends (Candice Bergen, Dianne Wiest) and her nephew (Lucas Hedges) in a cruise to find fun and come to terms with the past, while he flirts with a literary agent (Gemma Chan). While it doesn’t have a date yet, it’s confirmed to release in 2020, and at least we know that it can’t be worse than The Laundromat.
-Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom: While the expectations for the next film adaptation of an August Wilson acclaimed play were already high, the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman made this Netflix release one of the most anticipated movies of the season, considering this is his final movie. While past Supporting Actress winner Viola Davis takes the lead playing blues singer Ma Rainey in this tale of a heated recording session with her bandmates, her agent and her producer in 1927, Chadwick Boseman has a turn as the trumpeter Levee that was already being considered for awards, and now has even more people waiting to see. The thing is that one of the biggest competitions for Boseman this year will be Boseman himself, for his already acclaimed supporting turn on Da 5 Bloods, also released by Netflix. While the streamer will have to decide which of Chadwick’s performances will get the bigger campaign, this film by director George C. Wolfe has a cushy date set for December 18, and Viola is gunning hard for this movie to win.
-Mank (trailer): As you may have noticed by now, Netflix has a lot of plates spinning around this season, and this is the big one. After befriending the service with House of Cards and Mindhunter, David Fincher is going black and white to tackle a script by his late father Jack, about the making of the classic of classics, Citizen Kane. More specifically, the making of the script, with previous Oscar winner Gary Oldman playing the lead role of screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz, while accompanied by Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins, Tuppence Middleton, Charles Dance and Tom Burke. After watching the first trailer of his satire of 1930’s Hollywood (that will release on streaming on December 4), it’s clear that this is gonna be catnip to old Academy voters, and it would be really hard for this to miss the Best Picture line up. Unless it’s a complete cinematic disaster, Mank is bank.
-Minari (trailer): While the last edition of Sundance took place in January, quarantine makes you feel like it took place two years ago. This year, the big winner of the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award in the US Dramatic Competition was a dramedy by Lee Isaac Chung, about a Korean family in the ‘80s who suddenly gets moved by their father (Steven Yeun) to Arkansas, to start a farm. Even though the reviews have been great, distributor A24 hasn’t really had a big, Oscar nominated hit for the last couple of years, and the COVID-19 crisis made them delay all their releases. But when we were ready to write this off, a new trailer for the movie came out, confirming that it’s in the game of this awards season. Maybe the pandemic will be of help to A24, considering that one of the reasons they haven’t had success is that they divided their attention into too many releases, and ended up getting not much. This time, they are betting all on Lee who, even if this doesn’t go anywhere, also has a new gig coming up as the director of the live action remake of Your Name.
-News of the World (sneak peek): So much of this year has felt like a game of chicken between a virus and movie studios. While many movies chose to skip this year altogether, Universal remains firm (for now) with its plans to open a wide movie on Christmas Day, with a Western that reunites Paul Greengrass and Tom Hanks in an enticing premise. In this drama based on Paulette Jiles’ novel, Hanks plays a traveling newsreader in the aftermath of the American Civil War, who is tasked with reuniting an orphaned girl with her living relatives. While the first sneak peek of the movie looks promising, the future is still in the air.
-Nomadland (trailer): While the world burns around Hollywood, Searchlight is betting big on Chloe Zhao’s new film. Using the strategy of taking the spotlight while the rest of the contenders is uncertain about how or when to be released, the indie drama began its journey at Venice, with critics raving about the story of a woman (two-time Oscar winner Frances McDormand) who, after losing everything in the Great Recession, embarks on a journey through the American West, living as a van-dwelling modern-day nomad. At the end of the fest, the movie won the coveted Golden Lion. To put that into perspective, the last three winners of the award were past Best Picture nominees The Shape of Water, Roma and Joker, with The Shape of Water (also distributed by Searchlight) also winning the big prize. After drawing critical acclaim following its virtual showing on TIFF and NYFF, Nomadland seems like the first lock in the Best Picture line up. Still, there are obstacles ahead. Will Zhao break the disappointment of the last few years, when deserving candidates for Best Director got blocked by the likes of Adam McKay and Todd Phillips? And will McDormand manage to get near a third Oscar, following a recent win for Three Billboards in Ebbing, Missouri? Time will tell.
-On the Rocks (trailer): While she hasn’t been near the Oscars for a while, Sofia Coppola is still a name that draws attention. This time, she opened the NYFF with a dramedy about a young mother (Rashida Jones) who reunites with her playboy father (Bill Murray, also reuniting with Sofia after Lost in Translation) on an adventure through New York to find out if her husband (Marlon Wayans) is cheating on her. The consensus seems to be that, while light and not near her best work, it’s still a fun and breezy movie, with a very good turn by Murray. While many would assume that this A24 production will disappear into the abyss when it releases on Apple TV+ on October 23, the dropping out of many candidates gives the movie a chance to, at least, fight for some Golden Globes.
-One Night in Miami (sneak peek): Following her recent Oscar and Emmy wins for If Beale Street Could Talk and Watchmen, Regina King is still striking hard, and this time, she’s doing it as a director. For her big screen debut as a filmmaker, she chose to adapt Kemp Powers’ play that dramatizes a real meeting on February 25, 1964, when Muhammad Ali (Eli Goree) followed an iconic win with a hangout session with Malcolm X (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Sam Cooke (Leslie Odom Jr.) and Jim Brown (Aldis Hodge). Opening at Venice, the film received glowing reviews, with many praising King (even though some said that the movie doesn’t fully translate the play to the film medium) and the actors’ performances, especially Ben-Adir and Odom Jr. (who, it should be said, also wrote an original song for the end credits of the movie, which could help his Oscar chances). Amazon Prime is hoping that this is their big contender this year, with plans of a theatrical release on Christmas and a streaming release on January 15. Judging by the praise this got at festival season, it has a chance to go a long way.
-Over the Moon (trailer): In a year with not that many contenders for Best Animated Feature, Netflix is betting on a musical adventure directed by the legendary Glen Keane, a classic Disney animator who recently won an Oscar for Best Animated Short for co-directing Dear Basketball. While our expectations were lowered by the first trailer for the movie, centered around a Chinese girl who builds a rocket ship and blasts off to the Moon in hopes of meeting a legendary Goddess, it’s still safe to assume that it has a shot at being nominated for something. Netflix also hopes that you like its big candidate for Best Original Song, which really, really sounds like a Disney ballad.
-Pieces of a Woman: While this year doesn’t have the amount of surprise contenders that a regular Oscar season usually has, we still have some movies that sneaked through festival season. The first one was the new, somber drama by Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczó, known for the doggy uprising pic White God, and the not-so-well-received sci-fi Jupiter’s Moon. This time, we follow a woman (Vanessa Kirby) whose life is torn apart after a home birth at the hands of a flustered midwife (Molly Parker) ends in tragedy, and then leads to a court battle that also makes her confront her husband (Shia LaBeouf) and her domineering mother (Ellen Burstyn). While the movie had mixed reactions, Kirby had plenty of raves in her direction, particularly concerning her performance during a 25-minute birth sequence that is said to be brutal. That brutality paid off, though, because Kirby ended up winning Best Actress at Venice, and Netflix bought the movie, which also has Martin Scorsese as an executive producer. If the Academy wants to crown a new face in the scene, Kirby is the one who will be targeted, following her acclaimed turn in The Crown and her supporting roles in blockbusters like Mission Impossible: Fallout and Hobbs & Shaw.
-Promising Young Woman (trailer): When theaters started to close because of the pandemic, Universal started the push of their movies going straight to VOD, with titles including Trolls World Tour and Never Rarely Sometimes Always. However, there was a title that was supposed to premiere in April, and then suddenly disappeared from existence. It was the directorial debut of actress Emerald Fennell, who wrote a black comedy with touches of a thriller, centered on a woman in her thirties (Carey Mulligan) whose bright future was derailed by a traumatic event, and who’s now looking for revenge. While the reaction to its premiere at Sundance wasn’t enough to consider a Best Picture run, the twisted performance by Mulligan earned her the best praise since the last time she was nominated for an Oscar, a decade ago for An Education. Now, Focus Features is planning to open the movie at Christmas, and are positioning Carey for a run at Best Actress.
-Rebecca (trailer): When the news came out saying that Ben Wheatley would adapt Daphne du Maurier’s psychological thriller novel for Netflix, many were shocked. Some people considered the chance that this was an awards play by the cult director, who is doing the same work that earned Alfred Hitchcock his only Best Picture win. But seeing the trailer for this new version, with Lily James playing the newly married young woman who finds herself battling the shadow of her husband's (Armie Hammer) dead first wife Rebecca, we have to wonder if there’s a point to the existence of this remake. We will find out if there’s any awards chances for this movie on October 21, when it releases on streaming. Let’s hope that Kristin Scott Thomas has something to play with as Mrs. Danvers.
-Respect (trailer): Every year, there’s one or two actors who announce to the world “I want an Oscar” and campaign like their lives depended on it. Last time, it was Taron Egerton (accompanied by Elton John, who actually ended up winning another Oscar). This year, it is the turn of Jennifer Hudson, who is playing Aretha Franklin in a biopic directed by first timer Liesl Tommy, and who’s hoping that this attempt at awards ends up more like Dreamgirls than like Cats. She has been doing announcement trailers (a year in advance), quarantine tributes, award show tributes, and every possible thing to get the industry to notice that she’s playing Aretha. Hey, Rami Malek and Renee Zellweger did it in the last few years, why can’t she. With a release date of January 15, Hudson wants that gold.
-Soul (trailer): Disney may be the studio that suffered the biggest hit because of the pandemic. Their parks are a loss, most of their big productions had to stop because of quarantine, and theaters in many parts of the world are closed. After the failure of Tenet for Warner Bros. and the experiment of the mouse house of charging people 30 dollars to see Mulan (which didn’t work at all), many wondered if Disney was gonna delay the new production by Pixar, written and directed by Pete Docter, who brought Oscar gold to his home with Up and Inside Out. The movie, which centers on a teacher (Jamie Foxx) who dreams of becoming a jazz musician and, just as he’s about to get his big break, ends up getting into an accident that separates his soul from his body, had a lot of promise, but the speculation of lost money was also a concern. Finally, Disney decided to release the movie on Christmas, but only on Disney Plus, causing another failure for theaters, but assuring that Disney at least can get more subscribers to its streaming service. And the movie? Well, it just premiered at the London Film Festival, and the critics are saying it’s Pixar at its best, with praises going from the look, to the script by co-director Kemp Powers (who also wrote the play of One Night in Miami, so he has many chances for a nod), to the score by Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste. That means that it’s already a top contender to win Best Animated Feature, and this may not be the only category in which the movie is gonna get nominated.
-Supernova (trailer): If there’s a theme this year in terms of Oscar contenders, it might be dementia. One of the examples of this is a small road movie directed by Hairy Macqueen, which premiered to good reviews at the San Sebastian festival. This drama centers on a trip taken by Sam (Colin Firth) and Tusker (Stanley Tucci), partners for 20 years, who travel across England reuniting with friends and family, because Tusker was diagnosed with early onset dementia. While usually the big awards role is usually the one of the person who suffers the illnesses, some reviewers are calling Firth’s work as the supporting companion some of the best of his career. With Bleecker Street buying the rights for a US release, this is a little film that could still make some moves.
-Tenet (trailer): For the first five months of quarantine, the big narrative in the world of film was “Christopher Nolan is gonna save cinemas”. But after postponing the release of the mind bending actioner for months on end, creating big demands and expectations to theater owners, and finally releasing as the sacrificial lamb of Hollywood, Warner Bros ended up seeing the opposite effect. Even though Tom Cruise loved to be back at the movies, critics didn’t share enough excitement to make a spy movie that goes backwards worth the possibility of dying of coronavirus. The audiences didn’t show up as much, and those who did attend, mostly complained about the sound mixing and the plot. After all the sacrifice, it’s highly unlikely that Tenet goes beyond technical awards. Let’s start the “Travis Scott for Best Original Song” campaign now, before it’s too late.
-The Boys in the Band (trailer): The Ryan Murphy blank check for Netflix has been interesting to follow. On the one hand, we have his new TV shows, which go from not existing (The Politician), to alternate movie history that doesn’t know how alternate history works (Hollywood), to a challenge of how much TV will you stomach if Sarah Paulson and other middle aged actresses are campy in it (Ratched). And now, we are seeing his producing hand over the movie side, which starts with the new film adaptation of the cult play from 1968, which was already a movie in 1970 and recently jumped to Broadway in 2018. The cast from the recent Broadway production (which includes Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer and Andrew Rannells) stars in Joe Mantello’s movie, telling the story of a group of gay friends in pre-Stonewall New York who reunite for a birthday party and end up revealing a lot of open wounds. While this movie got good reviews from critics, it kinda disappeared without a sound after beginning to stream on Netflix at the end of September. Unless the service wants to campaign for Golden Globes, this film is lost in the algorithm.
-The Devil All the Time (trailer): Another September release on Netflix was the new psychological thriller by Antonio Campos (Simon Killer, Christine) who didn’t manage to continue his streak of intense and terrifying character dramas with his messy adaptation of the dark novel by Donald Ray Pollock. Wasting a cast that includes Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, Robert Pattinson, Mia Wasikowska, Eliza Scanlen, Bill Skarsgard, Jason Clarke and Riley Keough, this twisted period piece managed to stay for a while in the Top 10, but the reactions from critics were mixed, and audiences were busy asking what was happening with Pattinson’s Southern accent (which with The King makes two years in a row, baby). The many prognosticators who had hopes for an awards play moved on a while ago.
-The Father (trailer): It’s safe to say at this point that Anthony Hopkins is a lock for a Best Actor nomination at the next Oscars. After its premiere in Sundance, every prognosticator pointed in his direction, and for the next few months he swept praise for his harrowing portrayal of an old man grappling with his age as he develops dementia, causing pain to his beleaguered daughter (recent winner Olivia Colman, who also got praised). Sony Pictures Classics will make Florian Zeller’s adaptation of his acclaimed play its big contender of the season, using Hopkins (who this year got a nom for The Two Popes) as a starter to also get Colman, Zeller and the movie nominated.
-The Human Voice (trailer): And speaking of Sony Pictures Classics, it’s almost safe to say that they have another Oscar in the bag this year. That’s because they just bought Pedro Almodóvar’s short film, his English-speaking debut that is an adaptation of the play by Jean Cocteau. In his version (that was acclaimed by critics after premiering in Venice), Tilda Swinton plays the woman waiting at the end of a phone, expecting to hear from his ex-lover who abandoned her. Considering how the competition for Best Live Action Short Film has become somewhat lacking in the last few years (I mean, have you seen Skin), this should be an easy award to win, especially considering how beloved Almodóvar is in the Academy, which nominated him this year for the great Pain and Glory.
-The Life Ahead: While we’re talking about legends, it’s time to talk about Sophia Loren. 16 years after her last leading role in a movie, the Italian icon returns with a drama that was bought by Netflix, who plans to campaign for her as Best Actress and for the movie in the Best International Film category. Directed by Edoardo Ponti (who is also Sophia’s son), this movie centers on a Holocaust survivor who takes in a 12-year-old boy who recently robbed her, in a contemporary adaptation of Romain Gary’s novel The Life Before Us. Netflix has set a date for November 13 to release this movie, and the campaign seems to be about the narrative of seeing Loren winning another Oscar 60 years after she won her first one for Two Women, by Vittorio De Sica.
-The Midnight Sky: Based on the novel Good Morning, Midnight, this collaboration between George Clooney and Netflix is once again making us ask one thing. Are we gonna get the director Clooney of Good Night and Good Luck, or are we gonna get the director Clooney of Leatherheads, The Ides of March, The Monuments Men and Suburbicon? Let’s hope he breaks his streak of blandness with this sci-fi story, which makes us think a little bit of Gravity: A lonely scientist in the Arctic (Clooney) races to stop a group of astronauts led by Felicity Jones from returning to a devastated Earth. With a release set for December, we have to hope that this is more than some Top 10 filler that will evaporate from existence in a week’s time.
-The Prom: In probably the biggest blank check of the Ryan Murphy deal with Netflix, this musical he’ll direct is based on the Tony-nominated show about a group of Broadway losers (Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, Andrew Rannells and James “boo” Corden) who try to find a viral story to get back in the spotlight, and end up going to a town in Indiana to help a lesbian high school student who has been banned from bringing her girlfriend to the prom. While it’s clear that this December 11 release is gonna sweep the Golden Globes, the emptiness of this year compared to others could clear the way for some Oscar nominations, including Meryl and the obligatory original song added to a preexisting musical for easy clout.
-The Trial of the Chicago 7 (trailer): When it was announced that Paramount was selling Aaron Sorkin’s new movie to Netflix, some people saw it as a studio dumping a failed awards vehicle to be forgotten. However, the excuse that Sorkin wanted to release this movie before the US presidential elections seems to be true, because critics really enjoyed his old school courtroom drama, centered around the trial on counter cultural activists in the late ‘60s. Everybody praised uniformly the huge cast, that includes Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jeremy Strong, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Frank Langella, William Hurt, Michael Keaton and Mark Rylance, which guarantees a SAG awards nomination (but makes it difficult to decide which actors will actually get nominated for Oscars). With a reaction that brings to mind the days of A Few Good Men and is the best reception he got since his Oscar winning script for The Social Network, the film faces a couple of hurdles. First of all, it got positioned as the frontrunner in the Best Picture race by some people, which instantly puts a target on its back. Then, we have to consider that the movie releases on Netflix this Friday, October 16, which makes it the first big contender this year to face the world, and which in these times of lockdown will probably make the reception to Marriage Story and The Irishman from last year look like a walk in the park. I mean, there are some people who aren’t swayed by Sorkin, and for good reason.
-The United States vs. Billie Holiday: While Paramount was quick to hand The Trial of the Chicago 7 to Netflix, there’s another movie that the studio kept to play in the upcoming awards season. This biographical drama follows the life of another famous musician, Billie Holiday (Andra Day), and we see the journey of her career in jazz as she is targeted by the Federal Department of Narcotics with an undercover sting operation led by Federal Agent Jimmy Fletcher (Trevante Rhodes), with whom she had a tumultuous affair. While the movie counts with a screenplay credit by Pulitzer winner Suzan-Lori Parks, the big question mark is the film’s director, Lee Daniels, who hit it big with Precious and then had results that were disastrous (The Paperboy) or financially successful, but not awards-wise (Lee Daniels’ The Butler). However, Paramount trusts in this movie, and with a release date on February 12, they want to make a splash.
-Wolfwalkers (trailer): While the attempts by Apple TV+ to establish themselves as a player in the TV world go from trainwrecks (See) to forgettable (The Morning Show) to eventually great (see Ted Lasso, everybody, this is not a joke), their plans to make a name in the film business have something to do with this year’s Oscars. While Cherry can come or go, they have a solid contender for the Best Feature Documentary with Boys State, but their big dog this year is the new movie by Cartoon Saloon, an Irish studio responsible for the acclaimed The Secret of Kells, The Song of the Sea, and The Breadwinner, all of which were nominated for Best Animated Feature. This time, Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart direct a story about a young apprentice hunter who journeys with her father to Ireland to help wipe out the last wolf pack. But everything changes when she befriends a free-spirited girl from a mysterious tribe rumored to transform into wolves by night. After getting critically acclaimed following its premiere at TIFF, this is a surefire contender for this year’s Best Animated Feature category, and Apple is gonna parade it before its streaming release on December 11. Also, while you watch that, you could watch a couple of episodes of Ted Lasso, too. It’s a really good show, it’s all I’m saying.
Anyways, that’s all the news from the last few months of festivals. No matter what happens next, this is gonna be a long, long, long race.

2020.10.07 08:47 pornfree93 Another story from another addict
I just created a new account specifically for my porn addiction recovery. I just wanted to share my story and ask some questions to the seasoned veterans here. I will try to phrase things to avoid triggers, but I apologize if it isn't enough.
NOTICE: This post will be a long one.
I've posted here once or twice over the years on other accounts, but now I've decided to create an account specifically for my recovery. Right now /pornfree is my only subscription, but I'm looking for others that might be healthy for me to browse when I'm feeling a particularly strong urge. I also disabled NSFW posts on my other accounts so I can at least make Reddit a safe space for myself. For those that haven't done this yet, I highly recommend that you take that step!
First I should specify that I am a 27 year old male. I was introduced to internet porn at the unfortunately young age of 9 by a school classmate, who was likely also introduced to it by a classmate (on and on the vicious cycle goes). At the time I was intrigued at the images I was looking at, but I kept the content relatively tame. There was much that I didn't allow myself to look at because it felt wrong. I didn't even know what masturbation was yet.
I had just recently been allowed to be home alone, and in the interest of keeping organized, my family kept a schedule on the kitchen table of everyone's whereabouts throughout the week. This was the perfect recipe to fuel my addiction because there were spans of hours when I could guarantee that I wouldn't be disturbed in front of the family computer in the living room. And if the schedule changed at the last minute I still had ample time to hide my activity between a car coming up the driveway and someone walking in the door. Part of the reason I enjoyed my secret online escapades so much was the rush of breaking the rules out in the open without getting caught.
That summer, another friend introduced me to masturbation. It was actually quite a bonding experience because we practiced it together while we were alone. His puberty had progressed to the point that he could "finish" like an adult would, but I would be "dry" for several months before I reached that level. It wasn't long before I realized that masturbation was much more enjoyable with porn in the mix, and my habit evolved. At first I played it safe; I would build a mental cache of images at the computer and then satisfy myself in the bathroom from memory, as it was far more likely that I'd be caught if my pants were around my ankles in the living room. But eventually I got bolder; I began pleasuring myself while viewing the images. The only time I was ever caught in the act was one day when my neighbor walked past the window in the kitchen while I was in the middle of my business. He stopped and asked me how I was doing, and I quickly pulled my shirt down to cover myself. To this day I still don't know if he saw me, but he had never done that before so I have to assume that he did. He didn't seem to have told my parents though, and nothing else came of it. Over the next few years there were minor incidents where I was caught with evidence after the fact (leaving lingerie catalogs open in the bathroom, cached images on the computer before private browsing was a thing, and overhearing conversations with my friends) always by my father, and he never told my mom (According to him he did this because of her strict views on things relating to sex. I had never noticed this about my mom before, and haven't really seen anything since to support it).
As time went on I developed boundaries to keep myself out of trouble. A few years into my habit I got a PSP (PlayStation Portable for those who aren't familiar), which was initially just a harmless game system. However, one day I discovered a web browser on the device, an idea that fascinated me as a tech-savvy kid (Wi-Fi was a brand new concept at the time), but also triggered the budding porn addict in me. Not long after, I discovered that the network equipment our ISP told us to install had a wireless router in it, and I figured out how to connect to it. Suddenly, I had a porn box that I could use in my bedroom at night, or even take into the bathroom during the day if I was bold. This is where my habit turned from borderline to problematic. I had effectively immediate access to porn for basically as long as I wanted it. I went from viewing porn for maybe 30min-2hr per week to 30min-5hr per day. I discovered more and more websites and the content began to escalate as I became gradually desensitized. Mobile web browsers couldn't play embedded videos yet, but I discovered that I could download them and watch them on the device media player. Suddenly the images I was satisfied with before could actually move, and that became my new high-value content.
Well into this new behavior, I began to feel like there might be a problem. It took a toll to hide these things from my family, because I've always been a relatively open individual and I'd never been particularly rebellious. I began to resent my PSP as I had stopped using it for games altogether. At several points, I factory reset the device and set a random password on it so that I couldn't access it, but after several days I would always break down and find a way to get back in. Eventually I decided that enough was enough and that I needed to get rid of it. I worked with my dad to figure out how eBay worked, and I sold it to someone on the other side of the country, under the pretense that I didn't use it much anymore. I was 12 years old, and I was finally free.
(Warning: long sub-story)
Of course, this freedom wasn't to last. The family computer was still there, and it had moved to the basement, an even better location than before because I was usually the only one down there. We also had a family laptop, and I used the schedule once again to learn when I could take the laptop into the bathroom. One fateful day, when I had the laptop in the bathroom, my dad came home early and went into the living room to watch TV. I was dumbfounded that I never had a backup plan for an event such as this, like I did when I had to use the living room computer. After deliberating for some time (and of course "finishing" what I was doing), I decided to put the laptop in the cupboard under the sink, underneath all the cleaning products in there. After everyone had gone to sleep, I planned to sneak it out and put it back in its case, and no one would be any the wiser. The laptop wasn't frequently used by my family so the odds were that no one would look for it. This evening, the odds were not in my favor. My dad needed the laptop for something and it wasn't in the case where it was usually kept. After some time, he involved my mom and sister in the search, and I hid in the basement because I knew I would end up giving something away. Eventually, my mom suggested it might have been stolen, as the laptop case was near the side door, and that door was usually open during the day. After a few more minutes of searching, my dad decided to talk to the cop across the street about what to do if we thought the laptop might have been stolen. At this point my heart was pounding a mile a minute, and my new plan was to wipe the hard drive and leave the laptop outside, as if the "thief" had miraculously returned it. That would have been (and would still be to this day) the biggest, fattest lie I ever told my family, and I am so glad that things didn't end up going to plan. An hour later, my mom opened the cabinet under the toilet and found the laptop. She immediately put 2 and 2 together, sent my sister to bed, and brought my dad downstairs to have a chat with me (after informing the cop across the street about the false alarm, of course). To this day, I have never had a more shameful interaction with my parents. My head hung low the whole time as my mom asked me hard-hitting questions in a hysterical tone that I'd never heard from her before: "you were just going to let us run around like chickens with our heads cut off?", "how long have you been looking at porn?", "do you masturbate to the pictures?". My dad sounded mostly disappointed but also remorseful, as he often was in cases where my mom was the main one yelling at me. I was grounded for a month, and my parents took away anything that they believed might be a trigger for me, to squash out the behavior for good.
For a time, that worked. But time heals all wounds, and eventually things went right back to the way they were before. That was a traumatic incident for both me and my parents, and I think after a while they just stopped wanting to think about it anymore. Maybe they thought I was cured. In any case, I was never caught again. In high school I got an iPod Touch and eventually an iPhone, which made it even easier and less risky than the PSP, but in this new era a mobile device was useful in so many other ways that my "sell it" solution wasn't going to be feasible. At this point I was still in full awareness that I had a problem and wanted to stop, but I hadn't quite accepted that it was an "addiction". The amount of time I spent on porn escalated to an eventual plateau (there's only so much time in the day), but I began to escalate in other ways. The content itself continued to escalate. I was a porn god. I learned my kinks and where to find stuff that could scratch whatever itches I might have in a given session. The other area that escalated was the locations where I acted out. Nowhere was safe: school, work, friends' houses, stores, hospitals, restaurants, family vacations. If there was a bathroom and internet access, it was fair game. As the years went on, there were several phases where I tried to quit, sometimes for longer than others, but I always failed. I talked about porn with friends occasionally to test the waters and see if anyone else had my problem (no one ever revealed any indication), but I only had one friend that I could completely open up to about my desire to stop, and he is still supportive to this day.
In my junior year I met the woman who is now my wife. As our relationship began, I knew that I didn't want to treat her like my parents, and I told her quite early on about my problem. I don't know if it was the way that I phrased it as an addiction (I was using that word at this point) or her kind spirit, but she was immediately extremely supportive, and to this day I am extremely grateful that she has put up with me. I had always prepared for having a girlfriend, and I knew at the time that porn is not like real sex. Lucky for me, this woman had been sexually repressed by her parents, and it took an extremely long time for her to open up to me in that way. If we had jumped in right away, I don't know if we would have made it to where we are now. Early on, I never let porn get in the way of our relationship. I always kept it to myself and only occasionally talked to her about it. It is such a foreign subject to her that she never had much to contribute, so she has typically just listened, which was always very helpful nonetheless.
It wasn't until our sexual relationship began to bloom that my addiction began to interfere. We discovered that I have a "death grip" problem, which causes me to take prohibitively long to finish when we're together. Eventually we discovered ways to handle it, but even now it is still difficult and frequently causes tension. Additionally, my porn habits in combination with her repressed childhood have led us to be unsure exactly what a healthy sexual relationship looks like. We consistently discover that weeks have gone by since the last time we were intimate, and while we enjoy our times together, we find that it doesn't come to mind very often and it typically needs to be forced. These are things that we are still struggling to find solutions for.
It wasn't until last fall that anything inherent to my addiction became an issue in our relationship. I had been struggling for a few years with some "morally questionable" content that I had escalated to (I won't go into specifics, but it's something that most people would seriously judge me for if they knew about it, and I'm fairly certain that it's not illegal). Last fall it had been eating at my heart more than usual, possibly because we had just bought a home and the prospect of parenthood now feels closer than ever. I decided to open up and tell her in the hope that I could lessen the burden on myself by being completely transparent with her. I had never gone into any detail about the kind of content I viewed in the past, and this evidently came completely out of left field for her. It turned into one of our biggest fights ever, where the possibility of divorce was put on the table, even if it wasn't being seriously considered. To this day I'm not sure if I made the right decision by telling her. I am always completely honest with her and it felt wrong to keep it from her especially when it was concerning me so much. After a while we both calmed down and I was able to assure her that I was also appalled by my behavior and did not want it to continue. True to my promise, I still haven't partaken in this particular content since that event. But this was the first time that my addiction seriously hurt her, and I knew that it was time to get help.
I had seen a therapist back in high school for other issues related to anxiety and depression, where I had mentioned a few times that I believed I had a problem with porn, but it was never seriously looked at. This time when I scheduled an appointment with a therapist, porn was one of my priorities. My therapist was somewhat helpful, but she didn't have much experience when it came to porn so I wasn't able to make much progress. A few months ago, I switched to a different therapist, one who happens to specialize in porn and sex addiction, and the difference is like night and day. She has me realizing there were things I could have been doing all along, if I had only been willing to accept that it is not possible for me to do this using only my own willpower.
One of the first and simplest things that I did was to institute, with my wife, a household rule to not allow phones in the bathroom. That alone has made it much easier to stop myself submitting to urges, as bathrooms are my primary place to act out. There are several other things I'm looking to do, like reading books about porn/sex addiction, joining a support group, and installing accountability software. I was aware of all these things before, but didn't believe I needed them because "I should be able to do this myself." I've discovered that is one of the hardest mindsets to break. I am now far more invested in my recovery, and I still have a very long way to go, but I now actually have hope that recovery is possible! This affliction that has been a part of over two thirds of my life might finally be coming to an end.
I hope that my story has been enlightening or relatable to others who are also struggling with porn addiction. It has been therapeutic for me to get it all down into words. I hope to participate here more often in the future to help myself and others on the path to recovery.
Some questions I have:
2020.10.04 17:51 mr-mewing This is how they going to get the population to 500 million people
so most people would assume people going to get killed by getting a vaccine or an extremely deadly virus which will kill everybody (like COVID-19) Nah just kidding.
but no my thoughts about this are different and I am going to explain it.
a childless generation is coming this because of higher standards from especially women but also more and more men because of what they see on their phone, think about porn, TikTok, Instagram. This is the platforms where most beautiful people get famous and likes.
let's talk about porn first
porn is a form of Biological/psychological warfare which weakness the mind and destroys love, it is also highly addictive. porn is getting more and more normalized in today's society which is really bad in my opinion guy's nowadays talk about sex and a really young age think about 11 to 12. I also see it in movies where porn and paedophilia get kind of promoted to think about the movie cuties.
Notice how the front page of every porn site has material that would be considered incredibly disturbing even a few years ago? Simulated children, simulated incest, cuckolding, etc. Not to mention that it’s expected for people to watch porn and lust after others while in “committed” relationships.
there is one suspicious company which form the heart of the porn industries which goes by the name mindgeek.
whose main goal seems to be to push certain types of content to the masses. Notice how their website doesn’t actually say what they do and uses so much evasive language? Because they actively push certain content onto porn sites to try to influence the masses. And, by the way, they WANT minors watching it.
They own PornHub, Brazzers, XTube, and a whole lot of other familiar names. Porn stars get blacklisted from the industry when they even mention MindGeek. not to forget to mention porn is free for a reason.
fun fact: porn was used as a weapon by Israël soldiers.
so porn is bringing men and women further from each other in terms of a real relationship.
also not to forget to mention this: if I am the devil (minute 1:10)
giving women more and more power.
first of all, I want to say I have nothing against women. But the point I want to make is that guys especially now do to the coronavirus will do everything to view some pussy or see ass or tits and even pay for it (onlyfans).
dating apps get viewed as the future of dating but I am worried about this because by bringing up dating sites and apps you give the power to women to get their perfect partner which is not bad at all but how this going to end up is that 20% of the male's using dating apps/sites will get almost all the girls and 80% almost none this is going on now especially in western Europe. You even get higher up in the Social credit system in China if you use dating apps.
this is basically the brake down of the face , which could be from bad posture as a child which leads to bad tongue posture and this could lead to a dropped maxilla and crooked teeth and sleep apnea. Also if go for braces to fix malloclusions this will even make it works although their are expanders which work the same like you're tongue but then it is used with more pressure to open the suture. But I see it a lot in young children with destroyed faces , because of bad posture (video games mobile phones at a young age , because of the soft food and because they sit to much.
example : old vs modern generation mouth breathing : mouth breathing
but one thing I notice is that you see this a lot more happening with boys/men then with girls/women and this is because the skeleton of a female is smaller than the skeleton of a male which means that girls reach their genetic potential earlier then men. and therefore girls will mostlikely have better / more attractive face's than men (this not in all cases but I see it more and more). What you see because of this is that you see more and more guys on looksmaxing sites which is bad because thinking you're disadvantage/ugly won't bring you far in live.
mike mew (orthotropics) about cranio facial dystropy
this brings my to my final point and this is about the mouse utopia experiment which comes close to today's society and the current state where we now are also called "the beutifull ones"
these were the reasons I think it will work out this way the only positive thing about this is that it will take a long time before we hit extreme debt in numbers so we got time.
let my know what you think about this (also I don't speak English so it could be hard to read sometimes sorry for that)
